I was sitting in a book club with several young mamas this past summer, and we were going through a fabulous book*
…but my mind drifted back to the early 2000s, when I had babies and young kids. I could see myself going “there.”
“There”:
I would have picked this book up,
seen that it was written by a dad—
a rockstar dad—started comparing him to my husband, and in turn, begun resenting my husband for not being exactly like this guy.
Maybe you’re more mature than I was.
I certainly hope so.
Comparison is the thief of JOY.
Even in a marriage.
It’s okay to read good books.
It’s okay to read good books written by rockstar husbands and dads.
But if your husband isn’t exactly like the “guy in the book,” it doesn’t mean he isn’t a rockstar.
Different is not wrong.
Be careful. Be on guard against coveting something the Lord hasn’t given you. Instead, focus on finding the beauty, the good, and the “rockstarness” in your own husband.
→ An Exercise (because I always need something tangible!)
For the next Seven Days, write down (on paper or in the notes on your phone):
FIVE THINGS ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND that you are thankful for.
Get as specific as you can.
While you’re writing these, pray for him.
Pray for his character, his heart, his walk with the Lord, or anything else that comes to mind. Jesus wants to hear it all.
Be thankful for what you can.
Pray for him.
FIVE things for SEVEN days.
I hope this exercise opens your eyes to the very specific reasons why God put you together with your husband, and not “the guy who wrote the book”.
